What's more, your brain tries to adapt to this new situation by changing the way you chew, and this adaptation process can be far more complex and long-lasting than you might expect.
Tooth Loss: A problem beyond chewing
Losing a tooth doesn't just affect how you chew. It can also affect how you speak, the fullness of your lower face, the balanced function of your jaw joint, and even which foods you choose to eat. Over time, without even realizing it, you may start chewing on the same side all the time, avoid hard foods, or begin using some muscles less than before.
One study that followed patients after a single tooth was extracted found that within a year the width of the jawbone at the extraction site shrank by about 50%. Even more striking, around two-thirds of that bone loss happened in the first three months. In other words, bone loss isn't a slow, years-long process—in fact, the fastest changes occur right away, in those first few months.

Our teeth do more than just help us chew — they act like an internal support system for the lower part of our face. This can lead to a more tired, older-looking appearance.
For example, one study published in the British Dental Journal found that after restoring the vertical height of the bite (essentially making the lower face taller again), about 80% of 96 patients said they looked younger. An independent panel also noted that around 81% of those patients appeared younger — overall, they estimated the patients looked roughly 5 to 20 years younger after the treatment.

The importance of early treatment when you lose a tooth
Thinking “I'll just fix it later” after a tooth extraction only invites bigger problems down the road. The jawbone changes really quickly in those first few months, and as time goes on it can become much harder to treat.
That doesn't mean you have to rush to get an implant on the very same day, though. Every patient is different. The important thing is to have a plan in place before or right after the extraction. If needed, bone-preserving procedures can be done, and treatment can be scheduled at the most suitable time.
